Municipal officials in Maine are elected or appointed members of a municipal government, such as a town or city. These officials include assessirs, selectboard or councelors, road commissioner, clerk, tax collector, treasurer, committee members, etc. State law requires that only the selectboard and school committee be elected. All other positions may be elected or appointed as determinded by a vote of the governing body. Appointed posistions are done so by the Board of Assessors/Selectmen.
When there is a vacancy in a town office (other than that of a selectboard), the governing board (Board of Assessors) may appoint a qualified person to fill the vacancy until the end of the term. The vacancy of a school committee is determined according to Title 20-A §2305. When there is a vacancy on the select board, the select board may call a town meeting to elect a qualified person to fill the vacancy.
Unless otherwise specified, the default term of all municipal officials is one year.
