Brighton is a plantation in Somerset County. First known as the township T2 R1 BKP (Bingham's Kennebec Purchase), was then settled in 1801 and incorporated as the town of North Hill on June 20, 1816. It changed its name to Brighton on January 29, 1827.
The town ceded land to Athens in 1838 and again in 1862. In 1895 Brighton surrendered its organization as a town and reemerged with a simpler structure as a plantation.
Brighton Plantation is located between Route 150 and Route 16, where ME-151 and ME-154 meet in the village center. According to the United States Census Bureau, the plantation has a total area of 40.0 square miles (104 km2), of which 39.3 square miles (102 km2) is land and 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2) (1.68%) is water
